Marie Barkany Actress * 1852 Koschau (Košice, Slovakia) + 1926 Berlin Daughter of a factory owner who was trained for the stage by
Sonnenthal and Strakosch in Vienna. Arrived via Frankfurt (1878)
and Hamburg (1881) at the Royal Schauspielhaus in Berlin. Inaugural
role: Gretchen. In the 1890s he toured Russia, the Netherlands and
America. Appeared in Paris in 1900 with his own troupe to perform
dramas by Schiller and Goethe. Employee of L. Barnays during the
founding of the “Cooperative of German Theater Members”.
Guest shows also in Wuppertal. Barkany performed "The Taming of the
Shrew" (Shakespeare, The Taming of the Shrew) at the Municipal
Theater in Elberfeld on November 3 and 4, 1890 and the play
"The Way of Lowood" in Barmen on November 8 and 9, 1890.
All performances were preceded of a prelude: “The School Rider”.
The partner in both plays was Alfred Helm.
While Barkany received good reviews in Elberfeld, his appearance in
Barmer was criticized by the opponent-run Barmer newspaper Gerard.
Nevertheless, the Barmer Zeitung did not hide that in addition to
the applause, the audience also donated "a bouquet, a basket of
flowers and a wreath."
